Working with infants and toddlers at Open Arms:

Open Arms follows a play-based curriculum that is especially supportive of the youngest learners. Infants are encouraged to explore and follow their interests in a warm and loving environment that is tailored to their individual schedules and needs. Teachers are encouraged to take time to bond with each individual child to understand each child’s individual temper and personality to make the most of the teaching and caring relationship. Exploratory, sensory-based art is used as a mode of education as well as one-on-one book reading and interactive play.

Toddlers are provided more structure and encouraged to learn independence and self-help skills. Teachers lead short group time activities but engage mostly one-on-one and in small groups to promote learning and development. So much of toddler learning happens through play which makes understanding how to facilitate rich play important for successful toddler teachers. Fidelity to routines, classroom rituals and expectations also helps promote success.
